County Hurling League Division 3

Our Premier Intermediate side lost out to Borrisokane on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-16 points following an entertaining Division 3 League clash in Dolla on Saturday evening last.

Borrisokane started brightly and despite Orrie Quirke (free) getting the Mines off the mark in the 2nd minute the visitors hit back with three points on the bounce before a 9th minute goal fired Borrisokane 1-3 to 0-1 clear. Silvermines struggled to cope with a physically stronger Borrisokane side in the opening quarter but once they found their rhythm they narrowed the gap to two points with four unanswered points in a three minute spell mid-way through the half.

Silvermines continued to pick off some fantastic points from tight angles though before a 29th minute Borrisokane goal undid all their good work.  Borris led by 2-8 to 0-12 at the break but Silvermines did their utmost to reduce the deficit in the opening exchanges of the second half. Gerard Leamy came agonisingly close to a goal but his effort ricocheted off the crossbar and away to safety. Borrisokane were the better side in the closing stages though rattling off five points without reply between the 51st and 59th minutes to ensure a hard-fought victory for Seamus Gleeson’s charges.

County Hurling League Division 5

Our Division 5 fixture against Galtee Rovers on Sunday in Dolla also resulted in a defeat for the home side with the Bansha side running out 2-19 to 2-15 winners. Galtee Rovers led by 0-5 to 0-1 after eight minutes before 1-2 without reply brought the ‘Mines back into contention. Galtee Rovers regained the lead with a 25th minute major and led by 1-11 to 1-7 at the break. Silvermines battled hard in the second half but the visitors led by 2-17 to 1-13 with 53 minutes elapsed. Silvermines were afforded a late consolation goal on 59 minutes but it was Galtee Rovers who ran out deserving four-point victors.
